The stereotype of hypnotherapy is the first two. People think of stage performers at carnivals or dark magicians casting spells. The third kind of magic is what we are going for here; creating practical sustainable changes that you will take away at the end of your session(s). People enter into light hypnotic trances when they are doing something routine, such as driving, brushing our teeth or showering. One can also enter a hypnotic state when deeply relaxed, daydreaming, engaged in a book or movie or engrossed in a favorite activity.

During your session you will be sitting or reclining comfortably. A hypnotherapy session involves a verbal interaction between the client and Hypnotherapist. The Hypnotherapist will guide you into a relaxed hypnotic state and begin to ask you a series of questions. This will allow you and the Hypnotherapist to have a dialogue with your subconscious. You will be asked a series of questions about your memories, thoughts and beliefs, and encouraged to access your inner wisdom to develop solutions. The Hypnotherapist guides you to your own power. The Hypnotherapist will also give suggestions, and perhaps use metaphors to help achieve the therapeutic results you’ve agreed upon together.
[/vc_column_text][/vc_accordion_tab][vc_accordion_tab title=”What does being in hypnosis feel like?”][vc_column_text]Hypnosis is a deep state of relaxation, similar to that wonderful feeling of waking up the morning on your day off. Your body is still asleep, and your conscious awareness is narrow, perhaps focused on a dream, an idea, a feeling or an image. Physiologically, hypnosis is similar to falling asleep, except your mind stays aware while your body rests. During hypnosis, you may lose awareness of your body, as your mind is completely focused on whatever is being discussed at the time. When you do turn attention to your body, you will often feel like it is extremely heavy. As you emerge from the trance you may have the desire to stretch out, as if waking up from a nap. After the session is over, you will typically feel very relaxed. Your stress levels will be very low, you will feel very calm, peaceful, and centered.[/vc_column_text][/vc_accordion_tab][vc_accordion_tab title=”Will I cluck like a chicken? Bark like a dog?”][vc_column_text]No – Stage hypnosis and Hypnotherapy are very different. Stage hypnosis utilizes a very deep state of hypnosis that not everyone enters into naturally. Stage hypnosis is an excellent display of the sheer power and malleability of the subconscious mind when the function of the conscious mind is temporarily suspended.
Clinical hypnosis is a well recognized and serious therapeutic modality practice all throughout the world. Free will exists which means that everything done in a therapeutic session is done in complete cooperation and agreement with you, the client. Hypnotherapy clients usually feel a sense of awareness throughout their sessions and are able to recall what transpired.

The difference is that Hypnotherapy uses the power of that state for a specific therapeutic purpose and is goal oriented.[/vc_column_text][/vc_accordion_tab][vc_accordion_tab title=”How deep will I go?”][vc_column_text]How deep you will go, depends on a variety of factors:

  1. Your desire or motivation to reach your therapeutic goal. The more you really want to achieve whatever it is you are seeking hypnotherapy for, the more “on board” your whole being will be with engaging in the process.
  2. The level of comfort and trust you have with your Hypnotherapist. We call this rapport. Allowing another person to guide you through the hypnosis experience can make some people feel vulnerable, particularly if they have never experienced hypnosis before and don’t know what to expect. It helps to seek a Hypnotherapist that describes a life and healing philosophy that matches your own.
  3. Your previous experience with hypnosis or meditation. The ability to go into hypnosis improves with practice. Individuals who experience multiple sessions usually experience successively deeper hypnotic states. Each session is training for the mind. After someone reached a certain depth in their previous session, that state often becomes a reference point from which they can go deeper during the next session. This increase in depth is also likely caused by increasing trust in the Hypnotherapist, and the realization of how enjoyable the hypnotic state feels.
  4. If you have any unresolved negative, preconceived ideas about hypnosis you may not be completely open to the experience. This resistance can cause mental distractions that block the focus required for hypnotherapy. Discuss your previous experience and concerns with your Hypnotherapist prior to your session so that your mind can be put at ease.

  • Remove any distractions – place your phone on silent and ask friends and family to give you your space. This time is for you.
  • Well rested (good night’s sleep) and naturally (not from caffeine) high mental energy.  If you are not well rested, the mind has more of a challenge in focusing and a more difficult time accessing positive perspectives.
  • Not caffeinated. Avoid coffee two hours before a session. Caffeine activates the nervous system and the mind, which can work against the hypnosis, which requires focused relaxation.
  • Please notify me if you are fasting or have not eaten. It is hard to focus if you are distracted and ungrounded from hunger pains.

It is the analytical part of the mind — it is the part of us that judges, analyzes, scrutinizes and filters information and experiences. Our conscious mind is where we experience our running “stream of consciousness”, our self-talk, our fears, our doubts, and our sense of limitations. When the conscious mind is relaxed, and its functions subside, anything is possible. This is what happens when we dream at night — the most fantastical dreams of flying or other seemingly impossible feats and circumstances seem completely feasible and we believe them to be real. This is because the dreams are occurring completely in the subconscious.[/vc_column_text][/vc_accordion_tab][vc_accordion_tab title=”What is the subconscious mind?”][vc_column_text]The subconscious works without the knowledge or control of the conscious mind. This is why we are generally unaware of our behavior, in fact most of the time we are not even aware that we are acting unconsciously.

  • our brains begin to prepare for action just over a third of a second before we consciously decide to act. In other words, even when we ‘think’ we are conscious, it is our unconscious mind which is actually making our decisions for us.
  • Numerous cognitive neuroscientists have conducted studies that have revealed that only 5% of our cognitive activities (decisions, emotions, actions, behaviour) is conscious whereas the remaining 95% is generated in a non-conscious manner.

The subconscious mind does not judge or filter experiences. It believes what it is told and generally holds onto those beliefs permanently. The subconscious is where all our memories are stored, where our emotions are generated, and where our imagination lies. As children, we generally don’t have very developed conscious filters before the age of 10, explaining why children believe much of what they are told. Children don’t yet have enough life experience by which to judge or filter new information as being correct or reasonable. This is why so many of our emotional challenges as adults lie in events or circumstances from our childhood. Parents who don’t show love to their children or who abuse their children verbally or otherwise can cause deep-rooted beliefs.
